History

Vispoems was born when Francesca Samsel asked Michael Smith to contribute poems to a visualization project on climate change science in the Arctic sponsored by the Bradbury Science Museum of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Department of Energy and Los Alamos scientists were studying the effects of a warming climate on the Arctic’s landscape, waters, coasts and biota. Indirectly the effects on the lives and livelihoods of Native Peoples were also being document. The Arctic is a barometer for the world. Francesca’s idea was to combine poetry with paintings and video imagery to convey the science to the public, and to increase awareness of the threats posed by climate change to the fragile region and its peoples.
